What Is TDEE and Why Does It Matter?

Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is an estimate of how many calories your body burns in a 24-hour period, accounting for both metabolic baseline functions and movement energy output. Understanding your TDEE provides the baseline anchor for any structured nutrition or weight-management goal.

TDEE is composed of four primary components:

  • Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): ~60–70% of total energy burn, covering internal physiological maintenance.
  • Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT): ~15–20% of energy burn, consisting of fidgeting, walking, standing, and daily chores.
  • Thermic Effect of Food (TEF): ~10% of energy burn, representing energy expended digesting and processing macronutrients (protein has the highest TEF at ~20–30%).
  • Exercise Energy Expenditure (EEE): ~5–15% of energy burn, derived from formal gym sessions, sport, or cardio workouts.

Because NEAT and daily steps vary, tracking your actual food intake over 2–3 weeks against scale weight changes is the most empirical way to fine-tune your calculated TDEE. BiteCal simplifies this by turning food logging into a single photo snap.
